The Blessing of St. Clare

Happy Feast Day, everyone!  Today is the Solemnity of Our Holy Mother Clare!  It also happens to be the fifth anniversary of our arriving  in San Antonio to begin our new foundation.

Below are the words with which St. Clare of Assisi blessed her daughters so many centuries ago, a benediction which all Poor Clare abbesses will today bestow on their own spiritual daughters.

The blessing of Our Holy Mother Clare

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Our Lord bless thee and keep thee, and show His face to thee and have mercy on thee.  May He turn His countenance to thee and give thee peace, my sister and my daughter.

I, Clare, a handmaid of Our Lord Jesus Christ, a plant of our most holy father Francis, sister and mother of thee and of all the other Poor Sisters, unworthy though I be, beseech our Lord Jesus Christ, through His mercy and through the intercession of His most holy Mother Mary, of the holy archangel Saint Michael, and of all the Saints of God, of our blessed Father Francis and all the holy men and women, Saints of God, that the Heavenly Father give and confirm to thee His most holy blessing in Heaven and on earth.  On earth may He increase thee in grace and in His virtues among all His servants and handmaids of His Church militant.  In Heaven may He exalt and glorify thee in His Church triumphant, in the assembly of His Saints.

I bless the in my life and after my death, as much as I can and more than I can, with all the blessings with which the Father of Mercies has blessed and will bless His son and His daughter, in Heaven and on earth, and with which a spiritual father and spiritual mother have blessed and will bless their spiritual sons and daughters.  Amen.

I am at all times a lover of thy soul and of all thy sisters.  I beseech thee diligently to observe what thou hast vowed to the Lord.  Our Lord be with thee at all times, and may God grant that thou be in Him always.  Amen.
