My daughter, I want to teach you about spiritual warfare…
Our Lord spoke these words to St. Faustina in 1938, directing her for three days while she was on retreat (full text at the end of this post). Each of us is engaged, here on earth, with the spiritual battle which rages unseen all around us between satan and his demons, and us, the people of God, and His angels. It’s an overwhelming thought, that all hell is waging war against us, against Christ’s Church, against the Kingdom of God, but it is true, and we must be aware and well-prepared. Perhaps it’s not so hard to imagine spiritual warfare, when we can look around and see the wars and tensions rising around the world, not to mention the most obvious conflict in our own nation as we approach the elections.
So many Catholics and Christians are praying and fasting for our nation, and while the battle is never over, and satan never sleeps, God does send us little signs of encouragement to strengthen us in the fight. The 54 day Rosary Novena for Our Nation which Cardinal Burke promoted ended on October 7th, feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Is it just a coincidence that it was also the day WikiLeaks released the first Podesta email dump? Things are heating up even more in the world of politics, and we must continue to pray and ask Our Mother’s intercession for this nation, which God loves infinitely, in spite of our sins.
We aren’t under the impression that getting the “right” person in office will solve all our problems. The thing all of us need to remember is that we have only One Savior. We are called to do our part to help steer this country back toward the Judeo-Christian values (the basis of Western civilization, and not something to be thrown away lightly) that have been treated by the culture of death as something of which we should be ashamed. Christ is the True Light, and we are called to be channels of His Light, driving away the darkness of lies, of sin, of evil. Truth is a powerful weapon against evil, and we must continue to be courageous in being truthful in every area of our lives. Speaking the Truth can seem revolutionary in a culture that promotes selfishness and a utilitarian view of the human person. But God Himself is Truth, and when we speak the Truth we are speaking the language of Christ. Thanks be to God for the truth-tellers, and may He always protect and keep them.
There are 10 days left until Election Day, and if you want to pray a Novena leading up to November 8th, today is a great day to start so you can end Monday. Here are a few suggestions:
Election Prayer to Mary (can be prayed as a novena)
Novena to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Patroness of the United States)
Election Novena (from Priests for Life)
Prayer to Our Lady, Queen of Angels – Our community prays this every hour, and it’s a great prayer for the spiritual battle we are all fighting. We encourage you to add it to your devotions, and it would be perfect for a storm novena (praying it on the hour for nine hours).
Here is the full excerpt from St. Faustina’s Diary. Go here for a helpful commentary on these directives from Our Lord and how you can apply them to your own life:
My daughter, I want to teach you about spiritual warfare. Never trust in yourself, but abandon yourself totally to My will. In desolation, darkness and various doubts, have recourse to Me and to your spiritual director. He will always answer you in My name.
Do not bargain with any temptation; lock yourself immediately in My Heart and, at the first opportunity, reveal the temptation to the confessor. Put your self-love in the last place, so that it does not taint your deeds. Bear with yourself with great patience. Do not neglect interior mortifications. Always justify to yourself the opinions of your superiors and of your confessor. Shun murmurers like a plague. Let all act as they like; you are to act as I want you to.
Observe the rule as faithfully as you can. If someone causes you trouble, think what good you can do for the person who caused you to suffer. Do not pour out your feelings. Be silent when you are rebuked. Do not ask everyone’s opinion, but only the opinion of your confessor; be as frank and simple as a child with him. Do not become discouraged by ingratitude. Do not examine with curiosity the roads down which I lead you. When boredom and discouragement beat against your heart, run away from yourself and hide in My heart. Do not fear struggle; courage itself often intimidates temptations, and they dare not attack us.
Always fight with the deep conviction that I am with you. Do not be guided by feeling, because it is not always under your control; but all merit lies in the will. Always depend upon your superiors, even in the smallest things. I will not delude you with prospects of peace and consolations; on the contrary, prepare for great battles. Know that you are now on a great stage where all heaven and earth are watching you. Fight like a knight, so that I can reward you. Do not be unduly fearful, because you are not alone.
